NOTES

Hot Bites and Calm Seas: June Fishing is On in Falmouth

Atlantic Ocean - Dare, NC

Falmouth is heating up—and we’re not just talking about the weather. The offshore bite is picking up, and local captains are making the most of the seasonal shift.

Offshore Action: Blue marlin are showing up in better numbers now, with several boats reporting solid hookups throughout the week. Most strikes are happening on live bait or trolling skirted ballyhoo along the 500–1000 ft ledges. Mornings have been most productive, especially on calm days. Alongside the marlin, there's a steady mix of mahi-mahi (dolphinfish) in the area—many in the 10–20 lb range, with a few larger bulls in the mix. Watch for floating debris or weed lines for your best shot.

Tuna & Wahoo: Blackfin tuna have been a welcome surprise in the early mornings, often hitting small feathers or vertical jigs worked near the drop-offs. Wahoo activity has slowed a bit compared to earlier in the year, but anglers trolling at higher speeds are still pulling in the occasional fish, especially around the moon phases.

Reef & Inshore: Closer to shore, the reef fishing has been consistent. Yellowtail snapper, grunts, and triggerfish are being caught on cut bait over structure. Light tackle fans are having fun with jacks, barracuda, and the occasional mutton snapper in the shallower reef zones. If you're heading out in the late afternoon, bring chum—it’s been turning on the bite nicely.

Conditions: Seas have been moderate with afternoon winds picking up, so morning runs are your best bet for a smooth ride and solid action. Water clarity is excellent, and the currents have been manageable, especially near the reefs.

Pro Tip: If you're chasing pelagics, don’t overlook teaser chains and dredges—they’ve been making a noticeable difference in getting fish to commit. For reef trips, downsizing tackle and using fluorocarbon leaders is helping land more bites in the clearer water.

Tight lines out there, and don’t forget the sunscreen—this Caribbean sun isn’t messing around.
